Seeing Like God
Oh, to see a person for who they really are; to see them as God sees them. To be able to witness their inner-person, to see their heart in all its brilliance or corruption. If only I might see like you, O Holy God.
7But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look at his appearance or at his physical stature, because I have refused him. For the Lord does not see as man sees; for man looks at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” – 1 Samuel 16:7 (NKJV)
If I could see with your eyes God, what would I see of myself? Would I be pleased with the light inside myself? Would I be disgusted with the evil that still clings, scratching to keep hold of my heart in the radiant light of your Spirit who lives within me? How do I purge this darkness and open my heart fully to you?
The God that Sees
Would you give me sight like yours, gracious God, so that I might see others in their truest light? Show me an individual’s heart, make transparent the crude exterior, beautiful or not, and give me sight beyond sight. You are El Roi, the God that sees. You see me and those around me with perfect clarity. Show me real beauty, if it would serve your Kingdom.
10“I, the Lord, search the heart,
I test the mind,
Even to give every man according to his ways,
According to the fruit of his doings.” – Jeremiah 17:10 (NKJV)
May I be beautiful to you, O Magnificent Creator, God of Light and Beauty. May I reflect the light, grace, beauty and holiness that You possess, so that all may know and say, “this must be one of the citizens of Heaven. ”
Nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.
